A Taste of Japan – More or Less

Hiiiii! This is another scheduled post! I’m in Berlin right now, so you can expect a post on that sometime soon. Meanwhile, here’s a little adventure I lived a few weeks ago.

So I ordered some presents on amazon and you guys know these Kracie Popin’ Cookin things that YouTube seems to be crazy about lately? Well I decided to buy one for myself. So I ordered it, and it took about two and a half weeks to get here. When it did, and I took it out of its box, this is what it looked like:

The kit and the two cards, as well as the Eiffel Tower washi tape I got as a present (yay, thank you!) came safely wrapped inside the adorable cat & dog bag you can see in the picture.

I chose the takoyaki one because I wanted to try one of the savoury kits, instead of the original candy-flavoured ones. Wikipedia says that takoyaki  is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special moulded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus (tako), tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion. They are then brushed with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise.

The first thing I did, because I’m a perfectionist, is look up instructions for the kit on YouTube. Then I enlisted my sister’s help and we got started.

So the first step was to open up the kit and cut up the little tray. Here are the contents of the package and what the tray looked like when divided:

Then, it was time to start mixing. We took the pink packet first, poured some water into the powder and mixed until it was the right texture, kind of like soft plasticine. Then, we divided it into little balls and stuck them in the tentacle-shaped mold, which left us with eight little gummy tentacles.

Then we took the orange packet and mixed that up with water. We then divided the resulting mixture between the eight small round intents from the tray, stuck a tentacle in each and put the tray in the microwave.

We didn’t really know how long it was supposed to be in the microwave, so we heated it in short intervals, checking it every few seconds. Meanwhile, we also opened the blue packet and mixed it in with some water to make the mayo.

Once that was finished, we took the last packet and mixed it up to make the takoyaki sauce. Then, we flipped over the little octopus balls with the toothpick that came in the package:

And then we put it all together! We put the takoyaki sauce on the balls and then we tried to decorate (key word being tried) with the mayo. This was our final result:

The mayo actually tasted like mayo, and the takoyaki sauce was pretty nice. The little balls were curry flavored, which threw off the taste balance a bit. But even though the flavour could’ve been better, they were still not very expensive and pretty fun to make!

  1. Hmmm, takoyaki is like a pancake “puff” because instead of a flat grill, it’s cooked in a spherical griddle. If you want to try it, if you don’t go to a restaurant, I’d also suggest the freezer section of any Japanese market although if you don’t have the condiments (Japanese mayo, nori, bonito flakes, etc), it’s easier to go to a restaurant.

  2. I’ve been mesmerised by YT videos of people making these mini food kits with meticulous precision! You did well. 🙂
    Yes, I’ve had real takoyaki many times. We had them when we ate in Japan too. I like them but sometimes the texture of the dough part is too mushy or the sauce is weird.
